Between Surfaces and Substance by Mark Burry
Architectural Digest: Surface Consciousness

“Digitally created visual representations of substances where an expression of material truth is potentially meaningless.”

I can definitely relate. Often, a material represented digitally isn’t necessarily permanent. It can be a place holder or a means of creating inspiration. Also, structurally a building material may change as the design process moves forward. An Architect should not compromise the integrity of a structure.

“Such caustic irony can be claimed as a metaphor for social stereotyping, for instance, or the way we judge books by their covers, woods by their trees and, not least, architectural substance through its surfaces.”

I agree. Often, people view brutalist architecture as a cold, and demanding, but I find beauty in its raw materials. Often, it’s spacial context is better than that of any other. As they say, never judge a book by its cover.
